Lawyers must not charge a client interest on an overdue
account, except as permitted the Solicitors Act or as otherwise
permitted by law [rule 3.6-1.1 of the lawyers' Rules]. This includes interest on
unpaid fees, charges or disbursements. Paralegals are not governed by the Solicitors Act and, though they are
not prohibited from charging interest on an overdue account by any Law Society
regulation, paralegals should research the applicable law to determine in what
circumstances they are permitted to charge interest on overdue client accounts.
