Law Society Annual Reports go "Paperless" in 2010
Lawyers and paralegals will be required to file their annual reports electronically (e-file) beginning with the 2010 reporting year. Beginning this year, all communication relating to annual filing will be sent electronically by email, along with a year-end email containing a link to access the e-filing site.
August Convocation
New bencher Julian Falconer was elected at August Convocation and Convocation approved a series of committee and external appointments.

Pride Week event examines religious freedom and equality rights of LGBT persons
On June 16, 2010, the Law Society celebrated Pride Week 2010 by hosting a forum and reception with the Ontario Bar Association (OBA). Moderated by Milé Komlen, Chair of the Law Society's Equity Advisory Group and the OBA's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Section, the panel discussed the balance between religious freedom and LGBT equality rights. The Pride reception featured a speech by Douglas Elliott, a 2010 Law Society Medal recipient.
The Honourable Katherine B. Corrick appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice
The Law Society congratulates The Honourable Katherine B. Corrick on her appointment as judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto.
Madam Justice Corrick joined the Law Society in 1991 as a faculty member of the bar admission course, a position she held until 1996 when she was appointed the Law Society's first director, policy secretariat. Most recently, she held the position of director, policy and tribunals.
Special Divine Interfaith Service
Members of the judiciary, lawyers, paralegals, and members of the public are invited to attend a Special Divine Interfaith Service to mark the occasion of the Opening of the Courts of Ontario on September 14, 2010.
Celebrate the Opening of the Courts of Ontario
On September 14, 2010, at the conclusion of the Opening of the Courts of Ontario, the Law Society of Upper Canada will host a reception for members of the judiciary, lawyers and paralegals. The reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Convocation Hall, 130 Queen Street West, Toronto. Guests should enter the building through the main doors on the east side of Osgoode Hall. Please join us to celebrate the accomplishments of our legal system.

Legal Insurance
The Law Society believes that legal expense insurance is a useful insurance product, with the potential to make legal services more accessible and affordable for people who don't qualify for legal aid. The Law Society supports access to legal services through a number of programs and partnerships including our Lawyer Referral Service and Pro Bono Law Ontario.

The Law Society of Upper Canada Expresses Grave Concerns about the Disbarment and Disappearances of Human Rights Lawyers in China
The Law Society continues to condemn the persecution, ill-treatment and escalating human rights violations against lawyers in China through letters of intervention to Chinese authorities and the release of public statements. Most recently, the Law Society denounces the revocation of the practice licences of lawyers Tang Jitian and Liu Wei and the disappearance of Gao Zhisheng.
Osgoode Hall Tours
Tours of Osgoode Hall by the Law Society of Upper Canada are available all summer-long from July 2 to September 3, 2010. Tours begin at 1:15pm at the main entrance of Osgoode Hall and are free of charge. Self-guided audio tours are also available for download. The audio tours provide visitors with information about the exterior facade of the building and Convocation Hall, based on the medieval great halls of Europe.
Laurie H. Pawlitza elected as Treasurer of the Law Society
Laurie H. Pawlitza has been elected to lead the Law Society of Upper Canada as its Treasurer. She is the third woman to hold this post. The Treasurer is the top-elected official of the Law Society and presides over Convocation, the Law Society's governing body. Treasurer Pawlitza succeeded former Treasurer W. A. Derry Millar on June 29, 2010.
