Voters' Guide now available
2010 Paralegal ElectionsThe Voters' Guide for the first Paralegal Standing Committee Election is available online. The Voters' Guide provides voters with information about the candidates running for the five paralegal seats on the committee. Online voting opened on March 4, 2010 at 9 a.m. EST, and closes at 5 p.m. EDT on March 31, 2010. Eligible voters received an email from Computershare on March 4, containing their personal voter identification number and instructions. Voters can cast up to five votes in total, but may vote for a candidate only once and may only submit their votes once.

Law Society settles law suit with former auditors and actuaries
The law suit by the Law Society of Upper Canada and LAWPRO against their former auditors, Ernst &Young and former actuaries Tillinghast has been settled following a judicial mediation. As a result of the settlement the Law Society will receive payment of $8 million from the defendants. The law suit related to the calculation and reporting of claims liabilities incurred in the period 1991 to 1994 in the Law Society's Insurance Plan. No party made any admission of liability as part of the settlement.

Former Canadian diplomat and ambassador to Afghanistan to address Law Society
After three decades of social and political unrest, Afghanistan has an historic opportunity to break with the past and set the direction of its future. One of Canada's esteemed former diplomats and the first-ever ambassador to Afghanistan will deliver a keynote address at the Law Society on March 24, 2010 to reflect on his mission to Afghanistan and the prospects of achieving peace in that country. Members of the legal profession and the public are invited to attend this free event. Advance registration is required. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. To attend, please register by March 22, 2010.

Continuing professional development requirement supports professional competence
The governing body of the Law Society approved a continuing professional development (CPD) requirement of 12 hours per year for practising lawyers and licensed paralegals who provide legal services. "The introduction of the CPD requirement confirms both the Law Society's commitment to regulation in the public interest and the commitment of lawyers and paralegals to providing the highest level of service to clients," says Law Society Treasurer W.
