Hon. Roy McMurtry to lead comprehensive study of Ontario public's legal needs
The Honourable R. Roy McMurtry, former Chief Justice of Ontario, is leading an innovative new access to justice project that will look to the public for help in identifying viable solutions to overcome barriers to justice. McMurtry is Chair of the Steering Committee of the Ontario Civil Legal Needs Project, a comprehensive study of unmet legal needs in Ontario. The project is the result of a partnership between the Law Society of Upper Canada, Legal Aid Ontario, and Pro Bono Law Ontario.
Law Society's new 'know your client' requirements enhance public protection
The Law Society has enacted new client identification and verification regulations to assist lawyers and paralegals in identifying potential fraudulent client activities.
The new regulations, which come into effect October 31, 2008, include the steps lawyers and paralegals must take to verify the identity of new clients.

The Law Society of Upper Canada's Licensing and Accreditation Task Force
The licensing of lawyers is an integral part of the Law Society's mandate to regulate lawyers in the public interest. To protect the public, the Law Society licenses lawyers who meet high standards of learning, competence and professional conduct. As legal education and the context within which lawyers are licensed evolve, the Law Society must periodically evaluate its licensing process to ensure its learning and competency standards are being achieved in the most effective way. The Licensing and Accreditation Task Force is undertaking this evaluation.
