TORONTO, ON — The Law Society of Upper Canada presented a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to Thomas G. Conway at its Call to the Bar ceremony on June 23 in Ottawa.
The Law Society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. Recipients serve as inspirational keynote speakers for the new lawyers attending the Call to the Bar ceremonies.
Recognized as a highly respected and dedicated leader within the legal profession, Conway was called to the Bar in 1989. His exceptional advocacy skills have established him as a prominent litigation lawyer in Canada.
He was first elected as a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2007, and went on to become the Law Society’s 64th Treasurer in 2012. During his tenure as Treasurer, the Law Society’s governing body dealt with a number of challenging issues, including Alternative Business Structures, The Pathways Project and, Tribunal Reform. Law Society Treasurer Paul Schabas awarded the honorary LLD to Conway, who then delivered the keynote address to the soon-to-be lawyers, members of the audience and guests.
In his remarks to the newly called lawyers at the ceremony, Treasurer Schabas said, “As lawyers, you have the capacity to make a difference. Your education and training, and your position as a member of the profession, empowers you and, in turn, can empower others. Your job is to use the law, and to develop the law, for the good of your clients and the good of society.”
A total of 256 lawyers were called to the Bar at the Ottawa ceremony.
The Law Society of Upper Canada is the governing body for more than 50,000 lawyers and 8,000 paralegals in the province of Ontario, Canada. The mandate of the Law Society is to govern the legal profession in the public interest by upholding the independence, integrity and honour of the legal profession for the purpose of advancing the cause of justice and the rule of law.
