Paralegal Standing Committee
The Access to Justice Act, expands the public interest mandate of the Law Society to include paralegals. As a result of the legislation, a 13-member Paralegal Standing Committee was formed.
The committee is responsible for taking the lead in the development of the regulatory framework for paralegals. It is made up of five paralegals, including the chair, as well as five lawyer benchers and three non-lawyer (lay) benchers.
The five paralegal members, appointed by the Attorney General, are as follows:
- Paul Dray (Chair)
- Michelle Haigh
- Brian Lawrie
- Margaret Louter
- Stephen Parker
Paul Dray and Brian Lawrie have also been appointed paralegal benchers to the Law Society, giving paralegals a formal role in the regulation of all legal service providers in the province.
The five lawyer bencher members of the committee are as follows:
- James Caskey
- Glenn Hainey
- Paul Henderson
- Douglas Lewis
- Susan McGrath (Vice-Chair)
The three lay bencher members of the committee are as follows:
- Marion Boyd
- Seymour Epstein
- Cathy Strosberg
