Pakistan: Jahangir 2012

Reliable reports indicate that Ms. Jahangir, a prominent human rights lawyer, has received information that elements in Pakistan's military and intelligence agencies have plotted to kill her.

Ms. Jahangir is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Ms. Jahangir is credited with establishing the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and AGHS Legal Aid, the first free legal aid centre in Pakistan. In addition, she was UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary and Summary Executions from 1998 to 2004 and the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief from 2004 to 2010. Ms. Jahangir has been involved in a campaign against human rights abuses in Pakistan's Balochistan province. She also acted as the defence lawyer for Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, who was forced to resign by the Pakistani military. The Law Society of Upper Canada believes that Ms. Jahangir is being targeted because of her legitimate human rights work.

The Law Society intervened with the following Letters of Intervention:

Letter of Intervention: Army Staff

Letter of Intervention: Prime Minister of Pakistan

Letter of Intervention: President of Pakistan
