The Law Society intervened in the case of Mr. Muhannad al-Hassani, a lawyer in Syria who was imprisoned and disbarred. Reliable reports indicate that Mr. al-Hassani was charged with “weakening national sentiment” and “spreading false information” for attending and documenting the proceeding of the Supreme State Security Court without being the lawyer of those involved in the proceedings. Such charges appear to be politically motivated as they are often used to silence the freedom of expression of human rights defenders and political dissidents.
The Law Society of Upper Canada is deeply concerned about lawyers in Syria who carry out their work in a climate of intimidation and insecurity. Convocation approved the following letters of intervention, dated February 2, 2010.
