The Law Society intervened in the case of the imprisonment of Mr. Haytham al-Maleh, a lawyer in Syria who was imprisoned. Reliable reports indicate that Mr. al-Maleh was imprisoned for "weakening national sentiment", "spreading false information" and insulting the President and the judiciary. Such charges appear to be politically motivated as they are often used to silence the freedom of expression of human rights defenders and political dissidents. The Law Society is also concerned about Mr. al-Maleh's health while in custody.
The Law Society of Upper Canada is deeply concerned about lawyers in Syria who carry out their work in a climate of intimidation and insecurity. Convocation approved the following letter of intervention, dated February 2, 2010.
