India, Mohammad, Shoaib, Jilani and Faridi (November, 2008)

The Law Society of Upper Canada expresses its deep concern over the harassment, intimidation and assault of lawyers Noor Mohammad, Muhammad Shoaib, Zayfarayab Jilani and A M Faridi between April 2008 and September 2008 in the course of their attempts to defend Muslim clients.  It appears that the Bar Association of Dhar, the Faizabad Bar Association, as well as other bar associations across India have implemented bans preventing lawyers from defending Muslim clients accused of terrorist acts.  These bans are contrary to the fundamental right to be considered innocent until proven guilty and lawyers should not be intimidated by their own in the course of the legitimate discharge of their professional duties.  Further, police complicity in the attacks against lawyers is gravely concerning.
