ABS Working Group delivers information report on discussion paper responses
Convocation received an information report from the ABS Working Group, through the Professional Regulation Committee, summarizing responses to the ABS Discussion Paper, released in September 2014. The Working Group is reviewing the submissions received and determining the issues that will be the focus of continuing dialogue with the professions.
Convocation established the ABS Working Group in 2012 to study ABS in light of:
• business structure changes taking place in other commonwealth countries
• the increasing globalization of the practise of law
• ongoing technological innovations in the provision of legal services.
No decisions on ABS have been made. The Law Society expects to continue its study through 2015/16 to determine if implementing some form or forms of ABS, with appropriate regulatory oversight, will serve the public interest. Read the full report, or see more information, including copies of submissions.
Historic discipline data project complete
A project to gather historic discipline data, approved by Convocation in 2011, is now complete. The project has provided easily accessible information on historic discipline processes and outcomes and lays the groundwork for legal historians who may wish to build on what has been learned. The results are available in the History section of the Law Society’s website. Full report.
Bencher Avvy Go was appointed to the Challenges Faced by Racialized Licensees Working Group.
