Congo: Mubalama

In June 2008, the Law Society sent letters of intervention to Congolese authorities expressing its concerns over the news that lawyers Charles Cubaka and jean-Claude Mubalama received threats.

Charles Cubaka and Jean-Claude Mubalama are Congolese lawyers. They are all involved in a high-profile appeal before a military court. The four accused were sentenced to death in August 2007 for the murder on June 13, 2007 of radio journalist Serge Maheshe.

Reports indicate that the lawyers have received a series of anonymous threats that warn them to stop criticizing the conduct of the appeal hearing, to stop implicating the military in the murder, and to stop "tarnishing the image of the country".
