JOB PURPOSE
The Membership Services Representative/Receptionist is responsible for the providing timely, accurate, quality reception services to walk-in visitors to the Law Society, and for providing financial, clerical and administrative services to members.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- A college diploma, university degree or equivalent, in business and accounting.
- Three to five years' client service experience ideally in the financial services industry.
- Demonstrated experience and solid understanding of superior professional client service in order to interact with a full range of staff, members and visitors.
- Knowledge of the Law Society and other legal resources and agencies (Legal Aid, LawPro), including Law Society organizational structure, services, mandate, by‑laws, rules and regulations, and external resources and agencies relation to the Law Society or the willingness to learn.

Counsel, Legal Affairs
JOB PURPOSE
Counsel, Legal Affairs acts as in house legal counsel, providing a wide range of legal services and advice to the Law Society on a range of legal issues pertaining to the various operations of the Law Society, including the governance of the legal profession, under the direction of the Senior Counsel, Legal Affairs. Counsel, Legal Affairs also provides legal research, advice and other assistance to the Senior Counsel, Legal Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- An LLB and a licensee in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience working as counsel for the governing body of a self regulating profession, and/or as counsel in a corporate legal department or law firm.
- In‑depth understanding of the Law Society Act, and the regulations and by laws made thereunder, the Law Society's policies and the Law Society's role as a governing body of a self‑regulated profession.
- Broad legal subject matter expertise, including knowledge of administrative law, contracts, intellectual property, privacy, human rights, employment and labour law, and litigation.
- Excellent legal research and writing capabilities, including ability to scan large amounts of legal materials and literature, often in unfamiliar areas of law, and to organize and write legal opinions and / or legal reports.
- Excellent drafting skills, including legislative drafting skills.
- Superiour oral and written communication skills.
- Sound judgment with the ability to evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and impacts of decisions and courses of action.

Team Manager, Investigations, Professional Regulation
JOB PURPOSE
The Team Manager, Investigations leads the planning and execution of the team's investigation process, strategically managing a multi-disciplinary team to complete the timely investigation and disposition of allegations related to professional conduct, competence or capacity of Licensees, and other matters assigned to the department. The Team Manager is accountable for the file review, risk assessment, caseload assignment, coordination and management, resource planning, quality assurance, and risk management for the assigned team. As a member of the Investigations management team, the Team Manager participates in the implementation of strategic operations and work produced throughout the Investigations department.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- An LLB and member in good standing with the Law Society, able to lead a team of varied legal and professional staff in the conduct of investigations of serious and complex Licensee breaches of conduct, competence, and capacity in a complex regulatory environment.
- A minimum of 10 years' investigations experience or equivalent in a complex regulatory environment, at least 5 of which working in a leadership capacity.
- Knowledge of current trends and developments in the legal profession, their practical applications and prosecution techniques, including Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure and with rules of evidence.
- In depth understanding, and continued research and analysis in legally complex matters.
- In depth understanding of the Law Society's mandate, services, legislation and policies, or willingness to learn.
- Computer literacy, including word processing software, spreadsheet functions, and internet search capabilities.
- Broad understanding of the application of technology preferably in a regulatory / legal environment.

Senior Registrar Services Representative, Office of the Registrar, Professional Development & Competence
JOB PURPOSE
The Senior Registrar Services Representative is responsible for the dissemination of information and delivery of services to students, clients, and the public, providing responses to both routine and more complex enquiries within the Office of the Registrar in a timely and efficient manner as well as monitoring and processing the workflow of daily mail, faxes, email and phones.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- A college diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 4 years' client service related experience in a high volume, front-line service department environment.
- Experience on the AS400 preferred.
- Excellent grasp of delivering superior client service by phone, post, email or in person.
- Solid understanding of the Law Society, including organizational structure, services, mandate, rules and regulations currently in use, or willingness to learn.
- Knowledge of systems and databases (PET 1 and 2, LAWS, Scanning, Advansis, Moneris and particularly the AS400).

Archival Project Assistant, Corporate Records & Archives, Professional Development & Competence – contract from May 13, 2013 – August 23, 2013
JOB PURPOSE
The Law Society of Upper Canada Archives is seeking an Archival Project Assistant to assist with scanning and biographical research projects. The Archival Project Assistant will be responsible for the scanning of a select group of archival records, and adding the digital file to the archival records database (Minisis). Additionally, the candidate will research and verify biographical information on lawyers called to the Bar between 1913 and 1920, and enter this information into a biographical database.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- The successful candidate will be between 18 to 30 years of age and currently pursuing a college or university degree, and must be returning to full-time studies in the fall.
- Candidates must also register with Young Canada Works at http://www.pch.gc.ca/ycw-jct/index-eng.cfm.
- Some previous experience working in an archives is desirable, but not required.
- The student should be familiar with scanning equipment, Adobe software, and working with databases.
- The successful candidate will have excellent research, communication, and time management skills, and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
The deadline for applications is April 24, 2013.
The position is contingent on the award of funding assistance from Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations, an employment program sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Articling Student, Equity Initiatives and Discipline - 10 month contract
There is an opportunity to article with the Law Society in 2013-2014. The articling student will spend 5 months in the Law Society's Equity Initiatives Department and 5 months in the Law Society's Discipline Department.
While in the Equity Initiatives Department, the student will assist the Equity Advisor and staff in the Equity Initiatives Department in the development of education programs and policy options, including performing research, writing research reports, drafting model policies for the legal profession and attending meetings with lawyers and benchers of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
While in the Discipline Department, the student will assist counsel with their prosecutions, including performing research, writing research memoranda, drafting documents for the hearing and assisting counsel in preparing for hearings. There will be opportunities to attend discipline hearings with counsel.
Applicants must be registered in the Licensing Process at the Law Society of Upper Canada and intending to practice in Ontario. Knowledge of legal research databases and the Microsoft Office suite is an asset.

Publications Counsel, Tribunals Office, Policy & Tribunals
JOB PURPOSE
Publications Counsel is a lawyer responsible for the timely review, summary and publication of reasons of the tribunal and the provision of advice and assistance to the Senior Counsel and Manager, staff of the Tribunals Office, adjudicators and others regarding publication of tribunal orders and reasons.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- An LL.B and must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in legal editing and publishing of orders and reasons of courts or tribunals and demonstration of a full understanding of the tribunal adjudicative process. At least 2 of these years should be in an environment where legal research skills are utilized extensively.
- In depth understanding of the Law Society Act, mandate, services, legislation and policies or a willingness to learn.
- Thorough understanding of the principles of administrative law, legislation and the Rules of Practice and Procedure.
- In depth understanding of publication of orders and reasons.
- Current and highly-proficient editorial, legal research and writing skills.

As a self-governing regulator funded through annual lawyer and paralegal fees, the Law Society has a duty to regulate the profession in the public interest, to maintain and advance the cause of justice and the rule of law, to facilitate access to justice for the people of Ontario, and to act in a timely, open and efficient manner. Today, the Law Society of Upper Canada licenses and regulates Ontario's 44,000 lawyers and 4,200 licensed paralegals.
Central to the Law Society's primary responsibility for public protection is a tribunal hearing process that is fair, transparent and efficient. As Chair of the Law Society Tribunal, you are accountable to the Law Society's governing board and will be responsible for the implementation of the Tribunal's strategic direction, the performance of the Tribunal, which is composed of the Hearing and Appeal Panels, and providing leadership in all areas of the Tribunal process.
Overseeing an increasingly complex and growing number of hearing and appeal files, you will be instrumental in enhancing the way the Tribunal administers its adjudicative functions. With a focus on transparency, quality and timely adjudication, objective adjudicator appointment and evaluation criteria and cost effectiveness, you will lead in the Law Society's proper discharge of its adjudicative responsibility to address licensee conduct, capacity, competence and licensing issues.

Proctors needed
The Law Society of Upper Canada, Ontario's governing body for legal services providers, is recruiting Proctors to monitor our Licensing Examinations.
We have an immediate need for:
- English-speaking Proctors to work at our Toronto Licensing Examinations, held nine times per year, in February, March, June, August, October and November;
- English-speaking Proctors to work at our London and Windsor Licensing Examinations, held twice per year, in June; and
- Bilingual (fluency in English and French) Proctors to work at our Ottawa Licensing Examinations, held six times per year in March. June and November and
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Fluent and effective oral and written communications skills.
- Proven accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work as part of a team or alone as required.
- Ability to work to predetermined instructions.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Available to work a 12-hour shift and is comfortable spending long periods of time pacing or standing.
- Previous proctor experience or customer service experience is an asset.

The Law Commission of Ontario - Research Lawyer
The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) seeks a full-time research lawyer for a one-year contract to begin when the successful candidate has been selected.
The LCO's mandate is to make recommendations to improve access to justice, to stimulate debate about the law and support scholarly research. The LCO takes a holistic approach to addressing legal issues, undertakes multidisciplinary analysis and engages in extensive consultation. The LCO was created by an Agreement to which the Law Foundation of Ontario, the Attorney General of Ontario, Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, the Law Society of Upper Canada (all of whom provide funding to the LCO) and the Ontario Law Deans are parties. It is located in the Ignat Kaneff Building at York University, home of Osgoode Hall Law School.
As a research lawyer for the LCO, you will work with the heads of projects by undertaking research, helping to plan and organize consultations, and otherwise contributing to the LCO's law reform work. You will report to the Executive Director. The successful candidate will have at least a JD or LLB degree, with at least four years since graduation, familiarity with common law systems, particularly Ontario's, and well-developed research, writing and interpersonal skills. Preferably, the successful candidate will have policy development experience. The capacity to function fully in English and French is a significant asset. Compensation will reflect years since graduation from law school and other experience relevant to responsibilities as a research lawyer.
