In February 2011, the Law Society wrote a letter to the Iranian authorities expressing its concern over the harassment, arrest and imprisonment of human rights lawyers in Iran. Reports indicated that since the dispute surrounding the June 2009 presidential election, the Iranian government has taken a systemic approach to stifling dissent by arresting activists, opposition members and human rights lawyers. Human rights lawyers, in particular, face widespread persecution and intimidation by Iranian authorities.
The Law Society of Upper Canada has sent approximately nine intervention letters between 2006 and 2010. In September and November 2010, the Law Society released two public statements expressing concern about the general situation of lawyers in Iran with specific reference to Nasrin Sotoudeh and Houtan Kian.
