The Law Society of Upper Canada is deeply concerned about judges in Colombia who carry out their work in a climate of intimidation and insecurity where they are subjected to threats and in some instances disappearances, assassinations and attempted assassinations.
Judge Diego Fernando Escobar Munera was killed in broad daylight in the city of Medellin while waiting for a taxi. The suspected shooter fled the scene on a city bus, but was captured shortly thereafter by police. Judge Escobar Munera spent 19 years in the judiciary and has been noted for his transparency, honesty and dedication to justice. The reports the Law Society has received suggest that Judge Escobar Munera's death is related to the systemic targeting of judges.
The Law Society intervened by writing this letter of intervention.
