The Law Society of Upper Canada expresses its deep concern about the case of human rights lawyer Le Quoc Quan.
It is the Law Society's understanding that Le Quoc Quan remains in detention. According to reliable reports, on October 2, 2013, he was convicted of evading corporate income tax. The trial took only one day. Le Quoc Quan was sentenced to 30 months in prison and a fine of 1.2 billion dongs (approximately $59,000 USD) was levied against the company of which he is a director. The Hanoi Appeal Court upheld the conviction of Le Quoc Quan on February 18, 2014. Our sources also note that Le Quoc Quan’s wife has reported that he is in poor health. Le Quoc Quan’s conviction is believed to be politically motivated and intended to prevent him from continuing his legitimate human rights work.
